Dionysus is Zeus' favorite son, who is out of control and is on course for a cosmic collision with his father. His mother was mortal but when Hera turned her into a bee, Zeus made Dionysus a full god — the keeper of pleasure, madness, and wild frenzy.
Biography[]
Helping Orpheus[]
Taking the advice of a random mortal, Dionysus buys Zeus a watch as a symbol of time that father and son spend together. Zeus doesn't appreciate the gift at all, and when Dionysus confronts him about wanting to have a more responsible role, he ignores the request. Annoyed by this and by Hera's crude remarks, Dionysus storms off but not before stealing Zeus' watch but he is still unhappy, though he finds himself impressed with Orpheus performance at Heraklion. He then takes a personal interest in Orpheus, saving him from blowing his brains out on the beach after his wife's death. Orpheus panics and shoots Dionysus, but he reveals himself to be a god and impervious to wounds.[1]
Dionysus takes Orpheus to a bar known as The Cave, known for giving desperate people a chance at gaining access to the Underworld. However, The Fates punish Orpheus for denying Riddy her chance at renewal by taking her coin. He admits he did so because he loved her, but the audience, Dionysus included, are disgusted by his selfishness. And with that, he's disqualified. However, Dionysus bargains Zeus' watch to get Orpheus access to the Underworld.[2]
Dionysus meets his uncle Poseidon at the Aquarium, where he accuses Dionysus of stealing Zeus' watch. In addition to stealing his father's watch, Dionysus reveals he got a mortal to the Underworld, and he's going to be the first to bring someone back from the dead, and when that happens, Dionysus believes he will be owed some respect, but Poseidon warns him that if the mortal succeeds IN bringing someone back from the Underworld, Zeus will destroy them all. That said, he instructs Dionysus not to feed his father's paranoia and to return his watch. After doing exactly that, Zeus invites Dionysus into his war room and shares his plans for retribution. The two of them then head down to earth, where he promotes Dionysus as a show of gratitude for returning his watch. He seeks Dionysus' help with bringing the humans to their heels, starting with natural disasters. And then they're going to sow enmity and hatred. Dionysus is concerned for the well-being of mortals, but Zeus reminds him that they don't matter; he can play with them, eat them, make love to them, but he must always remember that they're better.[3]
Dionysus, Poseidon, Hera, and Persephone gather to discuss how they're going to deal with Zeus. However, he joins them before long, with four bottles of meander water. Hera and Poseidon both get full bottles, whilst Dionysus is only half full and Persephone receives none. Regarding Dionysus half full bottle of water, Zeus reveals that he knows his son gave Lachy his watch. Dionysus explains that he gave his watch to the Fates so that a mortal could get his wife back from the dead. As punishment for Dionysus' insubordination, Zeus kills his pet kitten, Dennis.[4]
