Episode 2 is the second episode of the first season of the Netflix original mythological dark-comedy KAOS. It was released on August 29, 2024.
Synopsis[]
Dionysus has an idea to help Orpheus reach his lost wife. Zeus, annoyed by the mortals' lack of respect for him, shares his own plan with Prometheus.
Plot[]
10 years ago, Caeneus is hunted down by a group of Amazons led by Hippolyta II, who shoots Caeneus with a crossbow, killing him for dishonoring the Gods and his tribe. As he breathes his final breath, he sees his mother, Myrina, among the Amazons.
Riddy is aboard a ship on the River Styx headed towards The Underworld, where she and the other deceased passengers watch an orientation video from Hades and Persephone.
Zeus instructs Hades to employ more divers, however, Persephone informs Zeus that all underworld workers who apply to be divers have to be found appropriate, accepted and trained. It is a skill and delicate process of taking the human souls through the Frame, but Zeus simply instructs them to find more divers.
The ship docks at the Asphodel, where Riddy and the other passengers are greeted by the handlers, armed with Cerberus dogs who bark at Riddy, who is then instructed to step out of line by Caeneus and is escorted away. Afterward, Caeneus and Prue are promoted as divers by Medusa, much to Caeneus' dismay, as he's waiting for his mother.
Dionysus takes Orpheus to a bar known as The Cave, known for giving desperate people a chance at gaining access to the Underworld.
Zeus arrives at the home of his human lover to discover that's just had sex with Hera, who disguised herself as Zeus. Upon his arrival, she reminds Zeus of their agreement of no more half-breed kids and turns Zeus' human lover into a bee and makes Zeus kill the baby that Hera just forced the young lady to give birth to.
Zeus confides in Prometheus how all the humans are no longer scared and how they no longer worship him. He fears that he's weakening and that the humans can sense it. He believes things need to go back to the old ways, when the humans were in constant fear of him. So he intends to take out half the world to demoralize them into submission, but Prometheus advises him against doing so.
Riddy discovers that she's been buried without her coin, meaning she can't go through the Frame and be renewed. And so, she will remain in the Underworld, where she serves as a worker for 200 years, when she will finally get her chance to renew.
Orpheus is set to compete against a couple mourning their child for his chance to save Riddy from the Underworld by impressing the Fates.
Riddy attempts to force her way through the Frame, but without her coin, she simply stays above water, unable to pass through, as she water refuses to rise.
The Fates punish Orpheus for denying Riddy her chance at renewal by taking her coin. He admits he did so because he loved her, but the audience, Dionysus included, are disgusted by his selfishness. And with that, Anatole and Klara win the competition and are awarded access to the Underworld.
Much like Riddy, Caeneus was buried without a coin and joins Riddy in the river. She now realizes that Orpheus took her coin, whereas with Caeneus, he believes his mother took his. He assures her it gets easier over time.
Dionysus pleads Orpheus case to get him into the Underworld. The Fates agree to help in exchange for Zeus' watch that Dionysus stole.
Zeus plans natural disasters as phase one. For phase two, he will tell the mortals stories to get them to hate each other, Trojan-War style. If woven correctly, a ten-year conflict will ensue. But then Prometheus reminds Zeus of his missing watch, which he got from Hercules. He said it was lucky, and so Zeus intends to find the watch before enacting his plan.
