Episode 4 is the fourth episode of the first season of the Netflix original mythological dark-comedy KAOS. It was released on August 29, 2024.
Synopsis[]
The search for Zeus' missing watch turns deadly. Trouble is brewing in the Underworld, as an old friend of Prometheus' meets his destiny.
Plot[]
Suspecting that one of his ball boys is responsible for his missing watch, Zeus begins killing them one by one. Hera shares this with Poseidon in addition to the fact that Zeus has made a war room with plans for two phases of destruction, but he's stuck currently. Zeus needs to let off some steam, but he can't start until he finds his watch, so she instructs Poseidon to find it and to start with Dionysus.
Many years ago, Prometheus was a free man and Charon was his lover. After having sex, Prometheus kills Charon in bed, but not before making him promise to help someone he'd meet in the future with a mark.
With Zeus' watch as a bargaining chip with the Fates, Dionysus manages to get Orpheus access to the Underworld throughout a trash can behind the cave. Orpheus joins Anatole, who is in search of his son. Anatole's wife, Klara, instructs Orpheus to help her husband and for them to look after each other.
Anatole is initially reluctant to accept Orpheus' help as he committed an unforgivable act by taking his wife's coin, which Orpheus admits is true, but he only did so in order to save her. And so, Orpheus and Anatole agree to work together towards their common goal of traversing the Underworld and finding their lost loved ones.
Hades and Persephone discuss how exactly a soul managed to disappear from the Underworld. Persephone fears it could be the start of something else. Admittedly, Hades is at fault for having sat back and allowing things to simply happen. Rather than go to Zeus as Persephone would prefer, Hades insists on handling it himself.
While searching for Fotis, Caeneus crosses paths with Astyanax, who pleads for help. He believes he got put "there" because of how he vandalized the monument. Caeneus offers to help him through the Frame, but Nax reveals he's already been through. Caeneus leaves Nax's side to answer Charon's call, and when he looks back, Nax is gone. Charon informs him that Fotis pissed on the fax machine and commands Caeneus to get back to work.
Riddy joins Caeneus, Prue and Adrian for lunch, revealing that she's a diver as well. Caeneus reveals that they pour salt on their food as it almost allows them to taste it, leading Riddy to question why they do any of the normal things they do like eat, sleep and shower, when they're dead. Adrien explains that it's simply a routine to make them feel normal. Prue then invites them to a party for the new divers.
Dionysus meets his uncle poseidon at the Aquarium, where he accuses Dionysus of stealing Zeus' watch. In addition to stealing his father's watch, Dionysus reveals he got a mortal to the Underworld, and he's going to be the first to bring someone back from the dead, and when that happens, Dionysus believes he will be owed some respect, but Poseidon warns him that if the mortal succeeds IN bringing someone back from the Underworld, Zeus will destroy them all. That said, he instructs Dionysus not to feed his father's paranoia and to return his watch.
While working as divers and escorting souls through the Frame, Caeneus reveals that he's technically almost 40 if you count the death years.
Just as Orpheus and Anatole prepare to swim across the River Styx, Charon pulls up in his boat and advises them against doing so, reluctantly agreeing to take them across.
Caeneus crosses paths with his killer Hippolyta II. He turns away from her in fear, but she demands he look her, calling him a blasphemer, further evident by the fact that he's stuck and unable to Renew. He asks did they torture his mother, but Hippolyta reveals she gave Caenenus up freely.
Dionysus returns to Mount Olympus with a replica watch to fool Zeus.
Charon suddenly stops the boat and reveals that he can only take one of them across, meaning they must fight to the death. Anatole is reluctant to entertain the notion of breaking his pact with Orpheus, but Orpheus takes very little convincing and attacks Anatole.
While Riddy didn't do anything with her life, which she didn't realize until the day of her death, Caeneus used to be an Amazon. They usually kick boys out at 11, but Caeneus was 15, as he wasn't officially a boy until a bit later, meaning he was born a girl. While discussing the dating scene within the Underworld, the two of them suddenly overhear Nax yelling for help.
Despite initiating the attack, Orpheus is overpowered by Anatole, who nearly kills him until Charon intervenes, having seen the mark of Orpheus' hand, which was created by Fate stabbing him. Charon realizes this is the man Prometheus made him promise to protect and throws Anatole overboard.
Zeus invites Dionysus into his war room and shares his plans for retribution. The two of them then head down to earth, where he promotes Dionysus as a show of gratitude for returning his watch. He seeks Dionysus' help with bringing the humans to their heels, starting with natural disasters. And then they're going to sow enmity and hatred. Dionysus is concerned for the well-being of mortals, but Zeus reminds him that they don't matter; he can play with them, eat them, make love to them, but he must always remember that they're better.
Charon and Orpheus arrive on shore, where a message written in the sand from Prometheus awaits Charon. It reads: "Thank You, P."
Riddy and Caeneus watch as Nax is forced into some kind of underground dungeon. They wait until the coast is clear before further investigation. They head down, where they discover the hollow shells of all the souls that passed through the Frame, even those whom they had sent through as recently as that morning.
