Biography[]
Riddy's death[]
Orpheus prepares for his upcoming live show at the Heraklion, revealing that he is going to open with a new song called Euridice. Riddy doesn't like the idea at all, feeling like their relationship is being made public against her will. Nevertheless, he performs the song, explaining that she is the love of his life, while at Hera's temple Riddy confesses that she doesn't love him anymore. It's during his performance that he learns Riddy is dead after being hit by a truck, which leaves him heartbroken, so much so that he's unable to speak at her funeral. Afterward, he gets drunk before going out to buy a gun, which he takes with him to a beach, intending to kill himself. Before he can do that, he is stopped by Dionysus.[1]
Saving Riddy from the Underworld[]
Dionysus takes Orpheus to a bar known as The Cave, known for giving desperate people a chance at gaining access to the Underworld. Orpheus is set to compete against a couple mourning their child for his chance to save Riddy by impressing the Fates. However, the Fates punish Orpheus for denying Riddy her chance at renewal by taking her coin. He admits he did so because he loved her, and with that, he is disqualified and stabbed in the hand. Despite this, Dionysus pleads Orpheus case to get him into the Underworld by bargaining Zeus' watch.[2]
Orpheus and Anatole agree to work together towards their common goal, traversing the Underworld for their deceased loved ones. They arrive at the River Styx and are given a ride by Charon on his boat. Charon suddenly stops the boat and reveals that he can only take one of them across, meaning they must fight to the death. Orpheus takes very little convincing and attacks Anatole. Despite initiating the attack, Orpheus is overpowered by Anatole, who nearly kills him until Charon intervenes, having seen the mark of Orpheus' hand, which was created by Fate stabbing him. Charon realizes this is the man Prometheus made him promise to protect, and throws Anatole overboard.[3]
Charon escorts Orpheus to a field, where he must undergo his final test alone in the wilderness. Orpheus struggles to make his way through the scorching desert. He begins to hallucinate and finds himself eating sand, after having mistaken it for water. Orpheus crosses paths with a man near a watercooler. He offers Orpheus a drink, but if he drinks the water, he won't be able to get his wife back. Despite being dehydrated and near death, Orpheus decides against taking the water, which was the final test. And with that, a door appears that leads him to Riddy.[4]
Orpheus tries to apologize to Riddy for taking her coin and preventing her from Renewing, but he did so in the name of love, and now he's come to bring her back to life so they can start again, but Riddy doesn't wish to return with him. However, before they can leave, Medusa takes Orpheus to see Hades, who refuses to allow him to return to earth. However, while Hades rests, Persephone goes behind his back to send Riddy and Orpheus back to earth.[5]
On their way back to earth, Riddy reveals that she loves Caeneus and that the day she died, she went to see her mom to say goodbye because she was leaving him and Krete. Whatever they had wasn't love anymore, and she didn't know how to tell him. That said, they both have a chance to start again on Earth, and so they continue on their journey. When they finally make it back to earth, he offers Riddy a ride back into town, but she'd rather walk, believing it would be better if they part ways. Orpheus apologizes for keeping her coin, but she thanks him for getting her life back and hugs him goodbye.[6]
